Plato's Biography and Bibliography.
Main topics: Socrates, dialogue, Academy, political problems. After following Socrates learning through Athens streets till his master death, Plato (a nick name) left Athens after his mater's execution and traveled in Egypt, Sicily and the Italy. Once back in Athens, Plato founded an educational institution named The Academy, an institution devoted to research and instruction in philosophy and the sciences.
Plato traveled to the city of Siracuse following the death of Dionysius I who had ruled the city-state. Plato was persuaded by Dion, the brother-in-law of Dyonisius, to tutor Dionysius II the next ruler. The plan was to instruct the future ruler in philosophy and science. Twice Plato tried with Dion, but the last time Dion was murtered and he ended sold as a slave: a pay-back rescue had to be paid by his Athens family. Plato spent the rest of his life teaching in the Academy, writing his dialogues and reading books in the growing Academy's Library. |
