Basic concepts: arché, myth, logos, atom. The History of Western Philosophy starts in the Classic Greece with the denominated Pre Socratic Philosophy (before Socrates). Some free citizens of diferent Greek polis had enough free time to ask and answer questions on their writings.
Those inquires could be summarized in just one single question: what is the arché of physis? The school of Mileto (Thales, Anaximandro and Anaximenes), Parmiendes of Elea, Heraclitus of Efesus, The School of Pythagoras of Samos or the School of the Atomists (Democritus, Anaxagoras or Leucipo) tried to answer that question about the origin or essence of the universe and of each natural thing. While doing so they toke a important step towards a rational scientific and logical (logos) approach leaving on the side those religious approached contained in Greek mythology. That was the beginning not only of philosophy but also the not easy path towards science. |
