To write an History of Philosophy Essay you need to connect three parts inside your text while explaining a philosophical period and the selected philosopher: an introduction, the body of your text and a conclusion. You must do this using good reasoned arguments, clear ordered ideas and an mature original approach. Writing in general and writing philosophical essays is not an easy task (almost like drawing a square circle!). To be able to do it you need to practice a lot: write one draft, read it, re-write it, read again, re-write one more time and so on.
Let's start. I offer you here two differentiated paths to help you. On the left side, a guided path just to help you start developing your writing skills; and on the right column, a tip collection guiding you to a more complex path to write philosophical essays.

Using "crutches" to support yourself
Are you unhappy with the grades you get on essays (history or literature essays)? Would you like to get some help? Can I offer you some "crutches"? With "crutches" you can improve your grades. Here is a "crutch" you can use.
It is a structure for writing an essay. Once you use the structure a few times it stops being a "crutch" and becomes a skill. In the next column there are "crutches" you can use to raise your grades. First, start using the structure below. Each box and arrow represent a paragraph. |
Philosophical EssaysYou need to take into account these aspects:
1. First, summarise the main idea in the given text. (This is the philospher's key message.) 2. Second, use the questions or statements you are given to structure your essay. 3. Third, write your essay paying attention to the spelling and grammar correction. 4. Finally, be carrefull with the formal quoting and citing rules. hek this "web track" [(#443989) page] (same password) to practice all this. Here you will have to give in, evalutate your class mates' essays and get your teacher evaluation: AULA VIRTUAL DEPARTAMENTO FILOSOFIA DO IES CAMPO SAN ALBERTO, NOIA |
